How to apply edge tape to your pickleball paddles

Edge tape is a simple, cost-effective solution that can help you protect your pickleball paddle and extend its lifespan.

Purpose of edge tape

Edge tape offers several benefits for your pickleball paddle, including:

  • Protects the paddle's edge from damage and wear, which helps to extend the lifespan of the paddle
  • Adds a visual element to the paddle, as edge tape is available in a variety of colors and designs

The primary purpose of edge tape is to protect your paddle's edges from scrapes, scuffs, scratches, and other types of damage that can occur during gameplay. Although it's not absolutely necessary to use edge tape, it can be particularly beneficial for those who play with edgeless paddles.

What is an edgeless pickleball paddle?

An edgeless paddle is one that lacks the traditional edge guard found on most traditional paddles.

Instead of having a distinct protective rim around the edges, an edgeless paddle has a smooth, continuous surface from the face to the sides. This design is more aerodynamic, offers players a larger and more consistent hitting area, and reduces the chances of mis-hits.

Selkirk highly recommends using edge tape on edgeless paddles because their edges cannot be repaired or replaced. Once the edges of these paddles are worn down and the core is exposed, the paddle's playability may be compromised.

Edge tape application process

Applying edge tape to your paddle is a simple process. Follow these steps for a smooth application:

  1. Clean the edge of the paddle with a damp cloth to remove any dirt or debris.
  2. Peel the backing off the edge tape, then stretch the edge tape to make it more malleable.
  3. Line the end of the tape with one end of your paddle and begin placing it around the edge, smoothing it down as you go. For some people, it may be easier to stand the paddle upright and apply the edge tape from the middle first to ensure that the tape is applied evenly.
  4. Once the edge tape is in place, use a small pair of scissors to trim any unwanted excess tape.

Limitations of edge tape

It's important to note that while edge tape can protect your paddle from minor damage, it's not armor and won't prevent all types of damage.

For example, if you smash your paddle on the ground, wall, or other hard surfaces, the paddle can still break. Edge tape is designed to protect your paddle from minor court-contact accidents that occur during gameplay.
