Ball on court: Pickleball rule or just good etiquette?

Whether you are brand new to pickleball or have been playing for decades, a pickleball rule that tends to be controversial — but shouldn’t be — is the ball on court rule. The rule says that, if a ball rolls onto your court during a rally, you should immediately stop play and the rally will be replayed.

Players from other courts should yell “ball” or “ball on court” when their stray ball heads in your direction.

The official USA Pickleball rule is actually the hinder rule

USA Pickleball Rule 3.A.16. Hinder: Any transient element or occurrence not caused by a player that adversely impacts play, not including permanent objects. Examples include, but are not limited to, balls, flying insects, foreign material, players, or officials on another court that, in the opinion of the referee, impacted a player’s ability to make a play on the ball.

The replay is mentioned in Section 8: Dead Ball rules

USA Pickleball Rule 8.C. Dead balls: A hinder called by the referee or player will result in a dead ball. The referee will determine if the hinder called by the player was valid. A valid hinder per the Referee or a hinder called in non-officiated play will result in a replay.

If there is no referee, like in rec play, the replay due to a ball on court will be determined automatically after the stoppage of play.

Why is the pickleball dead ball rule controversial?

The reason this rule can be controversial is because some players just don’t want to stop the rally, but there is a reason it’s a rule and not just a guideline: people can be seriously hurt. If a ball rolls on your court and you don’t stop play, you could step on the ball and break or sprain your ankle, or fall and hurt yourself in so many other ways.

Here is a Reddit thread with many different opinions on the topic:

Ball on court: The pickleball rule that prevents injuries.

It’s understandable that you don’t want to pause any pickleball rally, but there are more important things than winning a rally and you don’t want to be responsible for a player’s injury (or your own). Next time a pickleball goes astray, make sure you yell at the players on that court — and next time someone yells “ball” toward your court, be responsible and stop play.
