Plenty of competitive matches across the grounds today at Los Cab Country Club but ultimately the top two seeds in the mixed doubles draw were able to scrap and claw their way to the gold medal match. Let’s see how they got there.
Mixed Doubles Championship: (1) Johns/Bright vs (2) Wilson/David
We are used to seeing Anna Leigh Waters name beside Ben Johns' but she is out this week so in comes Anna Bright. With James Ignatowich taking the week off before the Red Rock Open next week we caught a glimpse of a first and maybe last time partnership today. Right out of the gate they were tested by Rafa Hewett and Lina Padegimaite but were able to pull away late to win game 3 11-7. It was smooth sailing the rest of the way as they defeated Navratil/Irvine 11-4, 12-10 and Collin Johns/Pisnik 11-3, 11-2. They’ll be the prohibitive favorites in Sunday’s final.
On the other side of the draw, it was a different story for Thomas Wilson and Vivienne David. They went to three games in their first three matches of the day but prevailed over the likes of Ge/Tyra Black and Staksrud/Rohrabacher. They saved their best for last as they defeated McGuffin/Dizon 11-9, 11-2 in the semifinals. Wilson/David continue to be one of the top teams to beat and will be looking to take it one step further Sunday by claiming a gold medal.
