The mixed doubles draw at the PPA Milwaukee Open got underway on Friday. With Anna Leigh Waters/Ben Johns and the Johnson siblings not participating, it was Dylan Frazier and Anna Bright with the #1 seeds next to their name. Let’s breakdown how they finished against the rest of the field.
Mixed Doubles: Frazier fiery en route to Sunday final
Dylan Frazier is often even keeled, never showing too much emotion out on the court but Friday was a different story. You could hear Frazier pumping himself next to partner Anna Bright as they battled their way through the top half of the draw, taking out Lea Jansen/Max Freeman in the quartefinals and Hayden Patriquin/Tyra Black in the semifinals both in three tight games. It took Frazier and Bright several match points to close out their match vs Patriquin and Tyra Black but they eventually did 14-12. It’s been up and down for Frazier in the back half of the PPA season so you could tell how much the win and the chance at a title meant to him in the closing moments.
Meanwhile on the bottom half of the draw it will be the second championship Sunday appearance for Gabe Tardio/Jessie Irvine as the #3 seeds also had to fight their way through their portion of the draw. They defeated Quang Duong/Tina Pisnik in three games in the quarterfinals and Andrei Daescu/Meghan Dizon in three games in the semifinals. Tardio showed flashes of why he is one of if not the most talented player on tour next to the steady veteran Irvine. Last time they made a final was in Utah this summer, where they unseated #1 seeds James Ignatowich/Anna Bright.
On the Horizon
Gender doubles kicks off at 12pm EST. Anna Bright and Rachel Rohrabacher will be looking for back to back titles and will be heavy favorites to do so. On the men’s side Hayden Patriquin/Riley Newman will look to do the same but look out for Quang Duong/Dylan Frazier to make some noise as a first time partnership.
