Rainy conditions in Dallas, TX moved all second-round matchups indoors today. Despite the cold weather outside the pros brought the heat indoors as the day started off with the biggest upset of the tournament. Let’s dig into the action starting with singles.

Men’s Singles: Haworth Upsets Johns

The day started with (16) Christopher Haworth taking down (1) Ben Johns. The most shocking part about the upset was the scoreline as Haworth beat Johns in straight games 11-4, 11-4. It setups up a showdown with (9) Collin Shick in the QF in now a wide open top half of the draw. In the other QF (4) JW Johnson faces off against (5) Christian Alshon. On the bottom half (2) Tyson McGuffin survived a scare from (15) Jhotthan Medina Alvarez. He will play a familiar face in (7) Jaume Martinez Vich. The winner will play the winner of (3) Connor Garnett and (6) Hunter Johnson.

Women’s Singles: Waters & Parenteau on a Collision Course

Seven of the top eight seeds moved on in women’s singles. The match of the day was between (7) Mary Brascia and up and comer (10) Dominque Schaefer as Brascia won in three close games. She’ll play (2) Catherine Parenteau for a spot in the semifinal. (5) Parenteau/McGuffin def (12) Daescu/Barr 11-1 in the 5th. The Johnson siblings were tested by youngsters Patriquin/Maggie Brascia but won 11-0 in game 5 to close it out. (6) Thomas Wilson/Vivienne David were the only top seed upset today as they lost in a thriller to Lindsey Newman and Federico Staksrud 11-8 in the 5th. Mixed doubles continues to be the most competitive event top to bottom.

Women’s Doubles: Top Seeds Cruise

The top six seeds did not drop a game today en route to the quarterfinals. It sets up some strong matchups tomorrow which include the Brascia sister’s vs Todd/Irvine and Anna Bright/Jade Kawamoto vs Tina Pisnik/Lindsey Newman. On the top half the top seeds Anna Leigh Waters and Catherine Parenteau will face Lauren Stratman and Vivian Glozman. The winner will get the winner of Allyce Jones/Callie Smith vs Vivienne David/Lacy Schneemann.

Men’s Doubles: Patriquin Delivers in Big Moment

There is no denying the ability of the young Hayden Patriquin but the results are starting to follow as he and Callan Dawson upset McGuffin and Daescu in four very tight games. They will look to take it a step further as they face the MLP Champion duo of Newman/Alshon in the QF. The Johns brother’s also advanced in four games while James Ignatowich/Tyler Loong had to come from behind to win in five games over Rafa Hewett and Connor Garnett.

On the Horizon

It’s a progression draw this week at Nationals so all QF matches will kick off tomorrow morning. Hopefully we get some better conditions in Dallas so matches won’t be forced inside all day. As always follow the PPA Tour on all social media platforms for updates on the streaming schedule.
