Inside the Selkirk Lab: How universal testing machines enhance paddle performance

Selkirk LABS employs advanced testing methodologies to ensure each paddle meets the highest standards of strength and durability. Central to this process is the use of a Universal Testing Machine (UTM), a versatile device that evaluates various material properties critical to paddle performance.
A Selkirk paddle rests inside a Universal Testing Machine in the Selkirk lab.

All information in this article comes directly from one of Selkirk's engineers, who shared expert insights during a rare break from the lab.

In its effort to deliver top-tier pickleball paddles, Selkirk LABS employs advanced testing methodologies to ensure each paddle meets the highest standards of strength and durability.

Central to this process is the use of a Universal Testing Machine (UTM), a versatile device that evaluates various material properties critical to paddle performance.

What Is a Universal Testing Machine?

A Universal Testing Machine is an apparatus designed to assess the mechanical properties of materials and structures.

By applying controlled forces — such as compression or bending — a UTM measures how materials respond under different stress conditions. This data is essential for understanding the strength, flexibility, and overall durability of the materials used in paddle construction.

Applications of the UTM in Paddle Testing

At Selkirk LABS, the UTM is integral to the development of new paddle prototypes and the quality assurance of existing models. The machine facilitates several key tests, including:

1. Deflection/compression testing

This test involves applying a compressive force to the paddle's surface to evaluate its response to localized pressure.

By measuring the amount of deflection under a known load, engineers can determine the paddle's stiffness and flexibility. This information is crucial, as it correlates with the paddle's playability and performance on the court.

Generally speaking, a paddle that can support more weight is stiffer and has a lower playability. On the other hand, paddles that support lighter weight often don't pass USA Pickleball guidelines because the spring rate will be too high.

2. Fatigue testing

Fatigue testing subjects the paddle to repeated cycles of loading to simulate prolonged use. This process identifies potential failure modes and estimates the paddle's lifespan.

By understanding how materials behave under continuous stress, Selkirk can enhance the durability and resilience of its paddles, ensuring they withstand the rigors of regular play.

3. Bending test

In the bending test, the paddle's handle is secured, and force is applied to the face until structural failure occurs. This assessment provides insights into the strength and flexibility of different throat designs, guiding improvements in paddle construction to optimize performance and safety.

Industry standards and on-site testing

The importance of deflection testing extends beyond Selkirk LABS. Regulatory bodies such as USA Pickleball and the United Pickleball Association utilize similar testing protocols to classify paddle performance.

For example, UPA performs deflection testing on-site at tournaments to determine whether specific paddles are approved for use in a given tournament.
