How foam technology is redefining pickleball paddles

As pickleball continues to grow in popularity, so too, do the technological advancements of equipment.

One of the most important factors of a pickleball paddle is its core because the core affects several gameplay factors, including power, responsiveness, and control.

Through Selkirk LABS, Selkirk Sport has been innovating a new core technology — PureFoam core — in the newest LABS paddle, Project 008.

This new core represents a leap in paddle performance and durability, setting a new standard for what players can expect from their equipment.

A look at traditional paddle cores: Polypropylene cores

For years, pickleball paddles have relied on polypropylene cores. While effective, this material has inherent limitations.

Over time, polypropylene cores can crush and deform under repeated impact, compromising the paddle’s responsiveness and creating inconsistencies that even seasoned players can’t anticipate.

What is PureFoam core technology?

By replacing traditional polypropylene with high-density foam, Selkirk has engineered a core that resists crushing and deformation, ensuring consistent performance and an extended paddle lifespan.

PureFoam doesn’t just last longer, it performs better. The high-density foam core flexes upon impact, increasing dwell time and enabling players to generate more spin and control without sacrificing power.

It also enhances the paddle’s responsiveness, creating an enlarged sweet spot that ensures consistent play across the entire paddle face.

How core thickness affects performance

The LABS Project 008 PureFoam core is available in three core thickness options, each tailored to meet the needs of different playing styles:

  • 13 mm hybrid core: This thickness offers a balanced blend of power and control, making it ideal for all-court players who demand versatility.

  • 16 mm control-focused core: Designed for precision, this thicker core provides greater finesse at the net and tactical control for those who prioritize placement over power.

  • 10 mm power-driven core: For players who thrive on aggressive shots and explosive power, the 10 mm core delivers the pop needed to dominate from the baseline.
