It was another beautiful day at the Darlington Tennis Center in Las Vegas. Men’s and women’s doubles were in action and there were tremendous matches all over the grounds. Let’s break it all down.
Men’s Doubles Championship: Top seeds to do battle for 1st time in 2024
The Johns brothers and JW Johnson/Dylan Frazier have been the top seeds in men’s doubles for the entirety of 2024. Surprisingly enough they have yet to face each other in 2024. It speaks to the depth in the field but on Sunday they will go at for a shot at the title. It’s been an up and down back half of the year for both teams, but a win Sunday will be a step in the right direction.
The Johns brothers had a difficult road but were absolutely dominate Saturday, taking down Riley Newman/Gabe Tardio and Federico Staksrud/Matt Wright in straight games. It was a classic Johns brothers’ performance, getting to the kitchen and grinding teams down at the line. Same can be said for Johnson/Frazier. After surviving a scare from the youngsters CJ Klinger/Quang Duong, winning 11-9 in the 3rd game, they rolled in the quarterfinals and semifinals over Tyler Loong/Connor Garnett and James Ignatowich/Andrei Daescu.
Women’s Doubles Championship: Who will win the trilogy fight?
The top seeds in the women’s doubles draw continue to show their dominance over the rest of the field. Anna Leigh Waters/Catherine Parenteau did have to fight to get past the tricky team of Jackie Kawamoto/Jade Kawamoto but were able to get it done in straight games in the semifinals. Anna Bright/Rachel Rohrabacher roared through the bottom half of the draw, defeating Lucy Kovalova/Lea Jansen 11-3, 11-0 in the last semifinal of the day.
It sets up a trilogy fight as both teams have a win over the other in the past two tournaments. The underdogs winning in Atlanta and the favorites winning in Virginia Beach to even the score. Bright/Rohrabacher will have to win the battle at the line if they want a chance to earn their 3rd win of the year over the top seeds.
On the Horizon
Championship Sunday will feature four Selkirk pros vying for titles. Dylan Frazier, Catherine Parenteau, Rachel Rohrabacher and Quang Duong will all look to capture gold on the last day of the Las Vegas Open.
