The PPA World Championships is the biggest tournament of the year. Brookhaven Country Club plays hosts to thousands of amateurs, professionals and celebrities all gathered together for a week of pickleball. Lets breakdown round of 16 action as there were exciting matches across all five disciplines.
Men’s Singles: Loyd stuns Johns
Michael Loyd is an electric athlete with the ability to hit shots from all over and today he did just that against Ben Johns taking him down in two games 11-3, 11-9. The bottom half of the draw opens slightly but still features the likes of JW Johnson, Tyson McGuffin and Quang Duong. On the top half, Jaume Martinez Vich defeated Jack Sock in straights and Federico Staksrud needed three games to defeat Noe Khlif.
Women’s Singles: Fahey erases big game 3 deficit
Parris Todd looked to be well on her way to the quarterfinals, up 9-4 in game 3 but Kate Fahey had other ideas, rattling off 7 straight points to pull off an improbable comeback. It sets up a quarterfinal showdown with Lea Jansen, who defeated Chao Yi Wang. The upset of the day was Samantha Parker, taking down the red hot Brooke Buckner in three games. The top half of the draw is loaded with the likes of Anna Leigh Waters and Catherine Parenteau.
Mixed Doubles: Duong teams up with Bright
One of the more exciting partnerships heading into the week Quang Duong and Anna Bright. They took care of veterans Collin Johns and Allyce Jones in straights. Riley Newman and Catherine Parenteau are back together after a run to the finals in Vegas last month. They’ll face Waters and Johns tomorrow afternoon. The upset of the day was on the bottom half as James Ignatowich and Vivienne David fell to Noe Khlif and Lea Jansen in three games.
Women's Doubles: Can anyone challenge the top two?
The last two months have belonged to Anna Leigh Waters/Catherine Parenteau and Rachel Rohrabacher/Anna Bright. Both took care of business today in straight games. Can anyone challenge these two this week? We’ll have to wait and see but an interesting bottom quarter of the draw includes Etta Wright/Meghan Dizon and Tyra Black/Allyce Jones.
Men’s Doubles: Duong/Klinger dominate Johns brothers
It was one way traffic in the Johns brothers match but in the wrong direction for the #1 seeds. Duong and Klinger dominated from start to finish with a blend of fast points and controlled kitchen action as they won convincingly 11-1, 11-6. The teenagers may be the favorites on the top half of the draw but will face a dangerous Christian Alshon and James Ignatowich tomorrow. Another surprise was veterans Zane Navratil/Travis Rettenmaier taking down Andrei Daescu/Gabe Tardio in straights. JW Johnson/Dylan Frazier also won their second match of the week 12-10 in the 3rd. They are living on the edge in Dallas but there are no pictures on the scorecard as they are through to the quarterfinals.
