The final day of pool play finished on Friday and one team in particular dominated as they head into the weekend looking to finish the job with another championship. Let’s break it all down below starting with men’s singles.
Men’s Singles: Tyson McGuffin remains perfect
It’s been a strong week for Tyson McGuffin in San Clemente. After dethroning Ben Johns on day one he took down Pablo Tellez on day two and finished it off with a straight game victory over Connor Garnett to sweep his pool. In the other pool Federico Staksrud also went undefeated, taking down Jaume Martinez Vich on day three. The other two semifinalists will be Connor Garnett and Hunter Johnson.
Women’s Singles: Todd pulls away late to secure semis spot
Parris Todd and Kate Fahey were battling it out for the final semifinal spot in women’s singles Friday morning. After Fahey lost to Waters in two tight games, she needed a Lacy Schneemann victory in order to advance on point differential. However, Todd was able to bounce back from a game two loss and win game three to secure the last spot. She will face Kaitlyn Christian while Anna Leigh Waters will face Mary Brascia.
Mixed Doubles: Johns & Waters team to beat
We’ll see if we get a rematch of the epic mixed doubles match from this summer between Ben Johns/Anna Leigh Waters and JW Johnson/Jorja Johnson which came down to the final few points. Both teams went undefeated in pool play. Christian Alshon/Catherine Parenteau will be a tough out for the Johnson siblings in the semifinals.
Men’s Doubles: Johnson/Tardio send Johns brothers packing
It was forgettable week for Ben and Collin Johns in men’s doubles. After squandering a big day two lead they could not find their best stuff against JW Johnson and Gabe Tardio who took the match comfortably in straights. They’ll face the undefeated Andrei Daescu and Tyson McGuffin in the semifinals. The other matchup will feature Federico Staksrud/Hayden Patriquin and Dekel Bar/Christian Alshon.
Women’s Doubles: Bright and Rohrabacher dominate on day three
Hurricane Tyra Black and Allyce Jones have given Anna Bright and Rachel Rohrabacher all they can handle the past couple of months but on Friday it was one way traffic. Bright and Rohrabacher were playing fast in the cold conditions and only surrendered three points on their way to victory. They’ll face Lacy Schneemann and Jorja Johnson in the semifinals. In the other pool it took three games for Anna Leigh Waters and Catherine Parenteau to beat Tina Pisnik and Parris Todd. Despite a 2-1 record, Pisnik and Todd did not advance due to point differential.
