Championship Sunday in Sacramento was full of exciting matchups and big names. Let’s dive into the five gold medal matches and see who came out on top.
Women’s Doubles Championship: Waters & Parenteau from start to finish
Anna Bright and Rachel Rohrabacher never found their footing in this match as they couldn’t neutralize the constant pressure from Anna Leigh Waters and Catherine Parenteau. The top seeds played first strike pickleball and never had to adjust as they won 11-2, 11-1, 11-5 en route to the title.
Men’s Doubles Championship: Frazier & Johnson fall short
Dylan Frazier and JW Johnson are known for being slow starters but they always find a way to come out strong after game 1. It looked like it was heading that direction today but Hayden Patriquin had other ideas as his counter attacks off JW Johnson speed ups was the difference in the match. Patriquin and Staksrud earned their first PPA doubles gold medals.
Mixed Doubles Championship: Waters & Johns in straights
James Ignatowich did his best to find early offense and put his fingerprints on this match but Ben Johns and Anna Leigh Waters were a step ahead. They were able to get the kitchen consistently and get into their preferred dinking patterns and pulled away in game 3 to win the match in straight games.
Men’s Singles Championship: Staksrud adds another
Federico Staksrud rode the momentum from his men’s doubles win as he jumped ahead of JW Johnson early and never looked back. Staksrud’s forehand from the back of the court kept Johnson guessing most of the afternoon as he won his 5th singles gold of the season.
Women’s Singles Championship: Waters defeats Parenteau
Anna Leigh Waters closed out championship Sunday with a convincing win over her women’s doubles partner Catherine Parenteau. Waters looked determined all weekend to bounce back from her loss to Salome Devidze as she played on her front foot early in points and kept Parenteau off balance.
