The PPA Atlanta Slam quarterfinals was once completed indoors today due to inclement weather. The day was full of highlight reel matches so let’s get into it and see who was able to punch their ticket into the Final 4.
Men’s Singles: Staksrud once again will face Garnett
Two of the top singles players in the world will do battle tomorrow for a spot in the finals. Federico Staksrud is looking to notch his 17th singles medal of the year while Connor Garnett is looking to avenge a recent loss to Staksrud in the Utah final just weeks ago. Staksrud snuck by the dangerous Gabe Tardio today while Garnett was able to take down Yates Johnson. Yates’ brother Hunter will take on JW Johnson in the other semifinal.
Women’s Singles: Todd takes down Brascia
Parris Todd was flawless in her match against Mary Brascia today, winning in straight games 11-1, 11-2. She’ll face Lea Jansen tomorrow who had a tough bout with Kaitlyn Christian, winning in three games. The top half of the draw features maybe the two hottest singles players on tour in Anna Leigh Waters and Brooke Buckner. Both cruised in their quarterfinal matches today.
Mixed Doubles: Parenteau & Alshon in top form
The Alshon/Parenteau partnership has come together very nicely since they teamed up San Clemente in June. They made the final there. They are one win away from another final in Atlanta after dismantling Jaume Martinez Vich/Milan Rane. They’ll face a team running red hot in Tyson McGuffin/Lacy Schneemann who backed up their upset over Bright/Ignatowich with another strong win over Tardio/Irvine. The top half features a familiar matchup between the Johnson siblings and Waters/Johns.
Women’s Doubles: Top seeds on a collision course
Can anyone stop Waters/Parenteau or Bright/Rohrabacher right now? The two teams have won every single gold medal this year except for one, when three of them were absent from the draw. That’s how dominate this year has been for the top two seeds. Today they both won in straight games. Callie Smith/Lucy Kovalova and Jackie Kawamoto/Lacy Schneemann will look to put a stop to that tomorrow. Kawamoto/Schneemann put together a strong straight game effort over the #3 seeds Wright/Dizon.
Men’s Doubles: Johnson/Frazier win a thriller
The match of the day was the last of the day between Johnson/Frazier and Patriquin/Tellez. It was high level pickleball from start to finish but the top seeds were able to notch the win 11-8 in the 3rd. The Johns brothers took down the thorn in their side of late Tardio/Daescu in three games as well. Will we see the top seeds face off in a final for the first time in 2024 or will Mcguffin/Martinez Vich and Newman/Alshon be able to keep the drought streak going? Tune in tomorrow and don’t miss out as both matches will be must see TV.
