The final day of the Las Vegas Open was electric, with five championship matches being played in front of a packed house. Let’s take a look at how each of them unfolded.
Men’s Singles Championship: Duong takes down Garnett
Quang Duong started the day off with a big win over Connor Garnett. Duong controlled the match with his passing shots from the back of court, forcing Garnett to beat him with multiple volleys from the kitchen line. In the business end of each game, it was Duong who delivered as he walked away with the gold medal.
Women’s Doubles Championship: Match of the year
The women’s doubles final between Anna Leigh Waters/Catherine Parenteau and Anna Bright/Rachel Rohrabacher turned into the best championship match we have seen all year on the PPA Tour. Waters was moving all over to give Bright/Rohrabacher different looks throughout the contest but it didn’t seem to matter at times as Anna Bright was dictating the flow with her hands and backhand flick. In game 5 down 2-6, Waters/Parenteau ramped up the aggression, evening the match back up at 9-9, ultimately winning 12-10 in the deciding game. This rivalry is heating up and we should see it a few more times before the year ends.
Men’s Doubles Championship: Johns brothers in straights
The Johns brother’s vs JW Johnson/Dylan Frazier is always a battle between two teams that play by the book and Sunday was no different. Both teams want to get to the line and play long dink points until the other team blinks. Both teams trust their game-plans and hands but it was the Johns' who took a close game 1 11-9 and never looked back, winning the next two games to win the title. After falling just short last week in Virginia Beach, they had no trouble finishing the job this go around.
Women’s Singles Championship: Fahey comes from behind
Brooke Buckner looked to be the one in control through two games, with a game under her belt and a 9-5 lead. Kate Fahey though has garnered a reputation for her mental toughness and she showed it, grinding out of the big deficit to win game 2. Game 3 was a war of attrition, with Fahey coming forward in the late stages of the match to close it out 11-8, winning her 2nd PPA gold medal of the season.
Mixed Doubles Championship: Johns/Waters take it in 4
Ben Johns/Anna Leigh Waters came out with pretty low energy in game 1 and the Johnson siblings took advantage, taking it 11-5. From there it was all Johns/Waters. Johns was much more aggressive attacking Jorja Johnson earlier in points as the top seeds won the majority of the hand’s battles. It is there 11th straight title of the season since dropping their only match in Austin, Texas back in March.
