Championship Monday brought some big time surprises. Best 3 out of 5 has gone the way of the top seeds most of the time but today was very different. Without further ado let’s breakdown and get into the results of all five championship matches.
Mixed Doubles Championship: Bright/Daescu Get it Done in Straights
The day started with a shocking result as Anna Bright and Andrei Daescu could do no wrong in the first final of the day. They defeated Ben Johns and Anna Leigh Waters in straight games as they had the #1 seeds searching for answers throughout. It's the first loss suffered by Waters & Johns in over a year and to do it in straight games has to feel extra special for the #4 seeds
Women’s Doubles Championship: Rohrabacher Goes Back to Back
Anna Bright and Rachel Rohrabacher secured their first gold medal in Minnesota last week and they followed it up with a giant upset over Anna Leigh Waters/ Catherine Parenteau in four games today. This is the first loss ever suffered by the team of Waters/Parenteau and officially ended their 70+ match win streak. This matchup is setting up to be one of the best rivalries on the PPA Tour in 2024.
Men’s Singles Championship: Johns Defeats Staksrud
It was one way traffic in the men’s singles final as Ben Johns secured a gold medal on his 25th birthday. Staksrud didn’t have his best stuff today and Johns took full advantage winning in two straight games.
Women’s Singles Championship: Castillo Finds Gold
Judit Castillo battled Kaitlyn Christian in a three game thriller to end the day and ended up securing her first PPA gold medal. Castillo is no stranger to high level singles matches and that experience paid off in the big moments of game 3 as she outexecuted Christian down the stretch. This may be a springboard for Castillo so don’t be surprised to see her in more championship singles matches moving forward.
