5 tips for choosing the best pickleball socks

When outfitting yourself with new pickleball gear, your socks may be the last thing you think of. But your pickleball socks are one of the most important pieces of your pickleball equipment, and you should make sure you have the right ones (it's almost as important as finding the best pickleball shoe). Here are some tips on finding the best pickleball socks for you.

1. Pickleball sock material

The material of your pickleball socks will make a big difference in moisture, comfort, and whether or not you get blisters.

Sock materials you should avoid:

- Cotton.

- Wool.

Cotton and wool will both trap moisture, which could lead to blisters and other foot infections. There are many athletic socks made of low-cotton blends or Merino wool, which are preferred for athletic socks.

Sock materials that are good for exercise:

- Nylon.

- Acrylic.

- Merino wool.

- Low-cotton blends.

The best options are always going to be made from breathable fabrics. Many of these options are also durable fabrics, which will help them last through even the most strenuous exercise.

Moisture wicking

You will want to find a pickleball sock that is moisture wicking, so that it is not soaking wet by the time you finish your pickleball game. Keeping your feet dry will also help you avoid blisters.

2. Sock fit

You will want to make sure your socks fit correctly for your pickleball play.

If your pickleball socks are too big, you can have extra material in your pickleball shoe, which is uncomfortable and can cause blisters.

If your pickleball socks are too small, they can cut off your circulation and restrict your foot movement. Playing with a painful foot will divert your focus away from your game.

You will want your pickleball socks to hug your feet, your ankles, and that your toes are able to move within the sock. You will also want to make sure the sock is large enough that it does not slide down behind your ankle.

3. Sock shape

Pickleball is a sport where the type of sock shape does not make much of a difference. Whether you prefer a ankle sock or crew sock (or anything in between), just make sure the sock you choose does not slide down into your pickleball shoe. You do not want your ankle exposed or extra sock material in your shoe — both can cause discomfort.

If you choose the right sock for you, you should not have to worry about blisters and you will never have to think about your socks while you are playing.

4. Sock thickness

The thickness of your sock will be almost as important as the material, but it is a personal preference. There are pros and cons of both thin and thick socks:

Thinner socks

- More breathable.

- Less noticeable.

- Less protection.

- Less comfort.

Thicker socks

- Offers more protection.

- More comfortable.

- Less breathable.

Whether you wear thin socks or thick socks has to do with your preference. But if you are playing for a short amount of time, thin socks will be fine. When you begin playing longer and longer pickleball sessions, you may need to find a thicker sock.

Try out both types of socks with your pickleball shoes, and see how they fit. You can test out different sizes and brands of socks before you find the right one.

5. Odor control

You will want to choose a pickleball sock that will keep your feet odor-free (or at least as odor-free as possible). To keep your pickleball socks free of odor, choose socks that can dry quickly, like Merino wool or polyester blends, as well as anything that is moisture wicking.

Also, do not forget to put your socks on when your feet are completely dry, wash your socks after every wear, and if you are playing for an entire day, change your socks when they get wet.
