Each year, the Pickleball Hall of Fame inducts three new members, and this year, Selkirk legend Cammy MacGregor was selected.
MacGregor has won more than 20 major pickleball championships since going pro in 2015. After winning the Senior Pro Nationals in 2022, MacGregor shifted her focus from a full-time tournament schedule to focus on the development of the next generation.
After the induction ceremony in November, Selkirk sat down with MacGregor to reflect on her career.
1. Congratulations on your induction into the Pickleball Hall of Fame! What does this recognition mean to you personally and professionally?
Thank you so much! Being inducted into the Pickleball Hall of Fame is one of the proudest moments of my journey in the sport.
Personally, it’s an incredibly meaningful honor, and I am filled with immense gratitude and humility. Professionally, this recognition validates my efforts on and off the court, highlighting the impact I’ve had within the pickleball community. It also inspires me to continue contributing to the sport’s growth and to support the next generation of players.
2. Looking back, is there a particular moment or milestone in your pickleball journey that you feel most proud of?
Honestly, there is no particular moment or milestone I can reflect on. I am truly honored and grateful to have had the opportunity to play alongside my friend and partner Jennifer Dawson for the past 10 years.
Every moment spent sharing the court with Jen has been a true pleasure, and I cherish the experiences we’ve had side by side. We have had great success, and I could not have done it without her.
3. What lessons from your earlier athletic career have helped you succeed in pickleball?
Throughout my earlier athletic career in tennis, I developed a strong foundation in dedication, discipline, and teamwork — qualities that have been invaluable in my pickleball journey.
The importance of consistent practice, setting goals, and learning from both victories and losses taught me resilience and adaptability.
4. You’ve been involved in pickleball for many years — how have you seen the sport evolve since you started playing?
Over the years, I’ve witnessed tremendous growth and transformation in pickleball. When I first started playing, the sport was relatively niche, with smaller tournaments and a close-knit community.
Since then, pickleball has rapidly expanded both recreationally and professionally, evolving into a global phenomenon embraced by people of all ages and backgrounds.
The level of play has risen significantly, thanks to athletes dedicating themselves to training and the sport’s increasing professionalism.
5. How do you think organizations like Selkirk Sport and others have contributed to the sport’s development?
Organizations like Selkirk Sport and others have played a pivotal role in advancing the development of pickleball. Through their commitment to innovation, they have elevated equipment quality and helped set higher standards for performance, making the sport more accessible and enjoyable for players at every level.
Additionally, these organizations have invested in grassroots initiatives, player sponsorships, and community outreach, all of which have contributed to expanding the sport’s reach and popularity.
By supporting tournaments, clinics, and youth programs, they’ve helped nurture new talent and foster a sense of community, ensuring that pickleball continues to grow both recreationally and professionally.
Their dedication not only supports the athletes but also strengthens the foundation of the sport, empowering the next generation to carry forward the values and spirit that make pickleball unique.
6. With the sport now on a global stage, what do you hope the next generation of players take from this moment in pickleball history?
As pickleball steps onto the global stage, I hope the next generation of players recognizes the significance of this moment and draws inspiration from it.
My wish is that they embrace not only the competitive opportunities and athletic challenges but also the sense of inclusivity, sportsmanship, and connection that have always defined the sport.
The worldwide growth of pickleball is a testament to the dedication of organizations, players, and communities working together. I encourage young athletes to seize the opportunity to make their mark, support one another, and uphold the spirit of camaraderie.
7. What do you think the future holds for pickleball?
I believe the future of pickleball is incredibly bright and full of potential. As the sport continues to grow both recreationally and professionally, I see it reaching even more diverse communities around the world.
With organizations and dedicated players working together, I expect we’ll see increased opportunities for youth development, greater visibility on the global stage, and more resources for players at all levels. I am hopeful that we will see pickleball in the Olympics.
8. What advice would you give to players who dream of following in your footsteps and making a lasting impact on the sport?
My advice to players who aspire to make a lasting impact on pickleball is to stay genuine in their passion for the sport and embrace every opportunity for growth — both as athletes and as members of the community.
Focus on consistent improvement, but don’t lose sight of the friendships and connections that make pickleball so special.
Remember that your legacy isn’t just measured by wins or accolades, but by the positive influence you have on others and the example you set for future generations.
Approach each match with humility and gratitude, and let your love for the game inspire those around you.
9. How do you balance the competitive side of the sport with the sense of community that pickleball is known for?
Balancing the competitive side of pickleball with its strong sense of community is all about perspective and intention. While I strive to play my best and push myself during matches, I always remember that the sport is rooted in camaraderie and mutual respect.
Win or lose, I make it a point to connect with fellow players, share encouragement, and celebrate the spirit of the game. It’s important to approach competition with humility and gratitude, making sure that the drive to win never overshadows the friendships and connections that make pickleball so special.
10. If you could describe what pickleball means to you in one word, what would it be — and why?
If I had to describe what pickleball means to me in one word, it would be "community."
Pickleball has connected me with people from all walks of life, creating friendships and memories that go far beyond the court.
